Highlights from VS Fashion Show

Hello, All! Did you get a chance to watch the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show? The outfits, models, music and overall show was amazing! The Victoria's Secret Angels rocked the soft wave curl that I have been mentioning in my previous blogs. They had to have achieved the look of bouncy soft curls by curling the hair with a 2 inch barrel and pinning the curls to set them for better hold. The hair color of the models was also a cause for hair envy. They had rich colors of brown and blond with settle highlights throughout the hair. All of  the hair color choices were soft and used face framing highlights. Attached is a link to see the clips from last night's show!

All About Men

My past blogs have been all about the women. So I would like to bring the men into the spotlight for this post. The guys have it easy when it comes to their hair. They typically use little hair product, purchase cheap shampoo and skimp on conditioner completely. Men have a variety of ways in which they can wear their hair, from short to long styles. Short styles require frequent trips to the barber shop and long styles are less maintenance. Let's take another poll. What's your favorite hair look on men, short or long hair? Cast your vote in the box above!

Give Thanks For Your Hair

For this blog I want to focus on the meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday that is fast approaching us. You may remember a few blogs back when I asked you to post about your idea of dream hair. Well, let's take the time to be thankful for the hair that we have on our head. Whether your hair is curly and you wish it was straight or the other way around. Even if you have very thin hair and wish it was thick and voluminous let's just be thankful and content with having hair to work with. Sometimes we take for granted our own hair and forget that there are women and men out there who have lost their hair from cancer or have other genetic issues that cause their hair not to grow.
I would like for you to comment with a reason why you "give thanks" for your hair.
Can't wait to read your comments!

Ann Romney won the previous poll survey for best hair on election night. Thanks for your votes!

Best Hair Election 2012

Unless you live under a rock or in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, you must be aware that the 2012 presidential election took place last night. The election battle had two great candidates to choose from and the victor was our previous president, Barack Obama. Standing next to the two presidential candidates were their spouses, First Lady, Michelle Obama and Ann Romney. These two women are smart and beautiful and have great hair as well. I thought it would be fun to have a little election of my own and have the ladies battle it out for the best hair of the 2012 election.

More Halloween Hair

It's the eve of Halloween! I hope you have either had fun dressing up this past weekend or are going to on Halloween night. I want to know if you are planning an amazing costume that is accompanied with amazing hair? This past weekend my friends and I dressed up and went out on the town. I dressed up as Katy Perry (again) and wore a pink wig. My friend, Brooke, was a 1920's flapper and I did something really fun with her hair that I would like to share with you! Its a great trick for either being in costume or just wanting to have a different look.

Brooke has long hair and in order to achieve a short 20's flapper wave, I had to give the impression of short, wavy hair. First, I took the hair and tied it into a low ponytail, leaving about five inches of hair below the ponytail holder. Next, I tucked and rolled the ponytail up to her nape and pinned the hair with bobby pins. The layers of her hair that fell out I curled and backcombed to create a messy fuller look. Then we used a glittery headband to really give the flapper look the full effect. Then spray with hair spray to give the "bob" more fullness and hold. What do you think of the finished look?

Have fun this Halloween and be sure to post me pictures of your look!

Put Your Wig On

Halloween is coming up! Who is excited? I know that I am more than thrilled to be able to dress up for the holiday. My favorite way to dress up for Halloween is to choose a costume that involves a wig. Wigs are so much fun to wear because it can completely transform your look. For the past two Halloweens I have selected pop stars, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj to dress up as and I rocked out a wig each time. My Katy Perry wig was simple and I made no changes to it but when I did the Nicki Minaj wig I created a leopard print effect to it. I want to challenge you this Halloween to select a costume that requires a wig and see how much fun you will have! (Please stay tuned to see my costume this Halloween, it is going to be amazing!)

Static Is Stopping Me

The days are getting colder and the air is getting drier. What does this dry air mean for your hair? It means that your hair will be getting drier too! Most women respond to this answer with a shouting out loud reply of, "no!" There is no need to fear! I have compiled a list of ways to prevent the dry and static hair blues.

  • Skip a day between shampooing. This will allow for your hair to build natural oils to fight static hair.
  • Use a leave-in-conditioner daily. This will give your hair the protein it needs to prevent dry and damaged ends. (Aveda Daily Hair Repair)
  • After hair is dry, apply a shine or smoothing serum to your hair. This is great for thicker hair that gets static because it won't weigh the hair down compared to those with finer hair. (Aveda Brilliant Finishing Gloss)
  • Work in a once a week deep conditioner into your hair routine. This deep conditioner will be the perfect weekly treatment for dry hair. (Aveda Dry Remedy Masque)
  • Try a glossing treatment from a salon. This treatment is a great way to boost the shine of your hair and improve the overall look and condition of the hair. (Aveda Glossing Treatment)
(I recommend Aveda products because they are 99 percent plant-derived and 89 percent of their herbal ingredients are certified organic. Good for the earth and good for your hair.)

Dream Hair

Day dreaming is fun to do. I like to day dream about being on a beach when I am in class or out with my friends when I'm doing homework. I also like to day dream about the hair that I wish I had. It's no surprise that everyone wants something that they can't have. For instance, girls with curly hair want straight hair and the straight haired girls want curly hair. The question, "why can't we be happy with what we have" will never be answered. However, there is nothing wrong with wishing you had someone else's hair! Who would yours be? It can be a past celebrity or movie character or even a present person too. I have given this question much thought and I know who mine would be, Brigitte Bardot. She had rocking hair in the 1960's. Her hair was teased, voluminous and a definite timeless look.

I want to hear your comments on you whose hair you'd like to have past or present?

More Fashion Week

There was so much happening at Fashion Week that I felt it would be a shame to only devote one blog to it. The week was a preview to spring and summer 2013. Even though the clothes that you see aren't wearable yet, the hair definitely is accessible. All the looks are soft and swept up which is a great look for fall or spring.

Here is backstage look at the show for Christian Siriano. Siriano along with Aveda Global Style Director, Antoinette Beenders created the look of sweet up ballerina buns. This look is very popular and I don't see it going away anytime so due to the simplicity of it.

Another designer Marimekko teamed up with Jon Reyman from Aveda to create another swept back ponytail. This ponytail is a great look because it has high shine and the technique of wrapping hair around the ponytail, dresses it up a bit more.

Fashion Week Backstage Pass

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has come to an end. I am so excited to bring to you a few behind the scenes discoveries! Since I work at an Aveda concept salon, I would love for you to see their creative team in action. The Aveda Artistic Team is amazing! I have been to a few shows and have seen their work in person, it is incredible.

Jon Reyman is the Artistic Director for Aveda. He works with hair cutting and styling. Look closely at his pin curl and straightener curling technique, it is genius! Here is a video of him at the Charlotte Ronson Spring 2013 show.

Color Me Bad

For my blog this week I was going to bring to you excerpts from New York Fashion Week. However, something else happened to me this week, in which I thought would be a great subject to bring attention to you, the subject of hair color correction. A hair color correction is when you, the hair guest, receive a color service with the results being opposite of what you had expected or the stylist had intended. It's important to note the difference between the two. One deal’s with unrealistic expectations, the other is the fault of the stylists.

The science behind hair color is quiet vast and there are a lot of tricks and methods that go into it. Hair color should not be looked at as a simple process. With this is mind, it's critical that as a client you go in to the salon with a clear direction and a strong idea of what you really want and don't want when it comes to color. Make sure that you and your stylist have a thorough consultation discussing your expectations and what she can deliver to you. A great consultation is the key to a happy outcome at the end of your service.

So, let's say you got your hair colored and you hate it. It's not what you had expected and the stylist informs you that her formula did not turn out as she had expected. Don't panic! Everything can be fixed in time. (This is another thing that is important to note) Your stylist has a whole arsenal of tactics she can use to fix and help treat your hair.

Here are the steps to remember when meeting with your stylist:
  1.  Have a clear idea of what you want and don't want before you go into the salon.
  2.  Have a consultation with your stylists to discuss the issues both you and he/she have with the color.
  3.  Love your hair after because it turned out as you had expected.
  4.  If it didn't turn out. Don't panic! It can be fixed.

Hurry, Fall Color

Oh, Yes! It's September, which means fall fashion is about to color our world. From the changing season to changing hair color, the change is no doubt an exciting time. So, what colors and techniques  are trending for fall? I'm here to bring you the latest scoop.

The word "ombre" is out and "illumination" is in for the color technique of darker hair on top and a lighter color on the ends. This fall the trend is still as strong as ever but the severity of dark to light is not as extreme as the past look. Opt for a soft blend of color from scalp to ends, even breaking the look up with highlights. If you are feeling more daring hot colors such as pink, purple and blue are trending to have at the ends of your hair.

Here is an example of 'illumination" that I recently did in the salon:

For redheads your color is always rocking this fall. Moving away from last years rich deep reds, this season softer red is in. A softer, less extreme red is more suitable for all skin tones, so it's easy this fall to be a redhead and shine. Check out Emma Stone, she does this look perfectly.

Blondes. It's time to tone it down for fall. No doubt the summer sun has brightened your hair up to a level that is off the charts. The key to blonde this fall is natural and multi-dimensional with a touch of ash. Gwyneth Paltrow and Julianne Hough have the best example for blonde this fall.

On a side hair and fashion note, guess what? It's Fashion Week in NYC! Here is a link to get all the up to date information.

Up Do's - Swept Up And Simple

A popular trend for up do's this Fall is swept up and simple. I have had a lot of requests at the salon for looks that have the hair curled and twisted back into a low bun or braided bun. This look is great because it's  easy to achieve by yourself and has a laid back feel to it. The days of slicking the hair back and tight curls on the top of the head are out the door. Below are examples of this look that I have done.

Here is a some tips for achieving this look.
1. Curl your hair with a one inch curling iron.
2. Run your finger through the curl to break up the curl.
3. Section the back from the top and sides.
4. Pull the back into a bun. Pinning until you get the placement you like.
5. Take the sides and front and pin back at random. Twisting and placing them around the bun.
6. Lastly, (my secret step) mess it up! Take the top and sides and loosen it from the bobby pins. This creates that extra "soft" look.
Good luck doing the swept up and simple up do!
